Let's Discover Walking in
La Sierra de Mijas, Andalucia, Southern Spain
Puerto de los Pescadores to Pico Mijas
By
Jack Cox
This is a chance to enjoy walking on forest
tracks. We shall be ascending for some 7 km, sometimes with
loose stones. Let's begin at the very western edge of the
Sierra de Mijas, at the
Puerto el Pescadores
(Venta Los Morenos roundabout, GPS: 36.616 north, -4.708 west)
between Mijas Pueblo, Alhaurín el Grande, Fuengirola and Coín.
We set off in the direction of Mijas Pueblo, following the road
for a couple of hundred meters until we see a path on the left
(GPS: N 36º37´03.0” - W 4º42´23.4”). This takes us by a
mixture of fire-breaks and forest tracks, until we veer left.
Here the track becomes more level and walking becomes easier.
After a little more than two kilometres we come to a crossing.
Turn right and follow the track ascending into the Mountain
range. We are now some 390 meters above sea level (GPS: N
36º37´53.1” - W 4º41´26.0”).
After a few meters we will find a chain that
limits the passage of unauthorised vehicles. From this point we
have a 7 km walk up to the weather station. It is a hard,
constant slope upwards although for the final couple of
kilometres it levels out a bit. Soon we come to a sharp
left hand bend. We are now in the Puerto de los Lobos
(Mountain Pass of the Wolves)
From here we emjoy a glorious panoramic view.
There are piles of stones here. Shortly after this section, the
slope smoothes out somewhat towards Cerro de Barrietos at 1,050
m (GPS: N 36º37´02.8” - W 4º40´01.7”). Climbing another
kilometre more, we will be in the Weather Station of the Pico de
Mijas.
