Walking in the
Picos de Europa
National Park

| Cosgaya | Distance Approx.  | Climb Approx.
circular walk 7 km (4.5 miles) 320 m

Well its late July and here I am in the Picos de Europa for the summer. It was just getting too hot down in Andalucia. Here it is 10 to 15 degrees cooler. The scenery here is magnificent. If you want some general information on the area I have prepared a page at
http://www.letsdiscoverspain.com/LD_PicosDeEuropa.htm

I have been here about a week now, getting my bearings. So here is the first walk. Its a nice easy one to get our legs accustomed to the terrain here. Cosgaya is a nice little village, reminiscent (in my mind anyway) of Summerset. There really is only one Cosgaya but I like to think in terms of New Cosgaya on the CA-185 road and Old Cosgaya up in the hills. They are quite distinct and separated by fields and woods. There are several car parks in New Cosgaya but the one we want to use is at 43.11050 N, -4.72960 W,  near Km 14 on the CA-185.

It is here by the car park that the Rio Cubo flows into the Rio Deva. From this car park, cross the road and proceed up the hill towards what I like to call Old Cosgaya. Where the road bends sharply (a hair pin bend) to the left, leave the asphalt road and follow the concrete track on your right. This is Waypoint 01.The river is on your right.

Soon the concrete track bends sharply to the left. Leave it here and follow the dirt track on your right. This is Waypoint 02.  Shortly you will cross a small bridge. You will hardly notice it except that suddenly the river is on your left. Just stay on the path for about 3.5 kilometers until you come to another bridge. There are various paths leading off but just keep heading roughly south or south west, always keeping the river on your left. The path is clear, you don't need to enter any fields. You will seldom loose sight of the river and it will always be in ear shot. Its a beautiful shady section of the Rio Cubo. There are lots of small waterfalls too.

.

When you come to it, cross over the second stone bridge. The river is now on your right. Soon you come to a junction with a bigger track. This is waypoint 03. Turn left here, onto the bigger, higher track, and head for Old Cosgaya. From here on you loose visual contact with the river. Turn left at Waypoint 04 and enter this charming oldie would village. Spend some time here, if you like, just looking around. There is a quaint old church here too. Then return down the hill to the car park. The village is a maze of small streets but if you keep going down you can't go far wrong.
