| Cancelada
is a very small urbanisation located between San Pedro de Alcántara and
Estepona, in the province of Malaga. However we are not
interested in the village, we are interested in the reservoir. |
|

.
|
|
|
Leave
the N340 at the Cancelada exit (km 165.5) and turn
inland heading in the direction of Los Flamingos Golf
& Country Club. After about one kilometer you will
see a tall, red and white, mobile phone mast on your
left. Park here and walk down the path on the left hand
side of the mast. You can even drive down if you want. |

This is a super place just to be for an hour or two. I just
love sitting on the dam wall Last time I was there I was
quietly watching blue damselflies and house martins flying low
over the water. Suddenly I realised one house martin was way
too blue. It was a kingfisher. I just stayed quiet, watching,
as it came and sat next to me on the dam, not five metres away.
It made three dives into the water but caught no fish as far as
I could see. Then it flew off. That is he closest I have
ever been to a kingfisher!!! |
|
|
|
. |
| Then I heard
a plop in the water behind me and realised I
was being watched by terrapins. An unforgettable
day. Lots of other wildlife has been
reported at this reservoir site and in the dense
gorse scrub which borders it on the south
side, including Sardinian warbler, Dartford warbler,
Fan-tailed warbler, Cetti's warbler, Reed
warbler, Great reed warbler, Willow warbler,
Melodious warbler, Blackcap, Siskin,
Stonechat, Spotted flycatcher, Nightingale,
Great gray shrike, woodchat shrike,
Black-eared wheatear, Iberian chiffchaff,
moorhen, coot, Dabchick, Great crested grebe,
Cormorant, Mallard, Shoveler, Pintail, Teal,
Wigeon, Pochard, Red-crested pochard, Cattle
egret, Little egret, Purple heron, Squacco
heron, Little bittern, Purple Gallinule,
Grey plover, Ringed plover, little ringed
plover, Kentish plover, Redshank,
Greenshank, Dunlin, Black-tailed godwit,
Whimbrel, Snipe, Sanderling, Common
sandpiper, Wood sandpiper, Green sandpiper,
Curlew sandpiper, Black-winged stilts, Barn swallow,
Red-rumped swallow, Common swift, Pallid
swift, House martin, Sand martin, Crag
martin, Hoopoe, Bee eater, Black redstart,
Crested lark, Woodlark, Skylark, Thekla
lark, Blue rock thrush, Kingfisher, Northern
wheatear, White wagtail, Grey wagtail,
Yellow wagtail, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk
and Marsh harrier, all in their appropriate
seasons of course. A wide range of raptors
may also bee seen in the sky overhead. |

| The above
species list was researched from Birdwatching on Spain's Southern
Coast
by
John Butler. I highly recommend this excellent
little book. |
